How to Install a Plantation Shutter on Craftsman Trim

With the rise of craftsman-style trim, we are frequently asked, "How do you install a plantation shutter on a window with craftsman trim?"

First, if your window has sufficient window depth, we recommend an Inside Mount L-Frame

This gives the impression that the shutter was "built into the home". See visuals below:

How an inside mount L-Frame sits inside a window

Of course, this isn't always an option. If you window tilts-in, you would lose that functionality with an inside mount shutter. In that case, you would have to decide if an inside mount look is more valuable than the tilt-in functionality.

Measuring for Outside Mount Application

When an outside mount application is required, this is how we recommend measuring for the shutter.

Width: Edge-to-edge of trim (take the largest measurement).

Height: Window sill to the fillet (the first protruding notch, usually right above the glass, sometimes it extends all the way to the top of the molding).

The shutter frame will run across sides of the vertical trim and up to the fillet. An outside mount L-Frame is most commonly used on craftsman trim. We have found this method to be the cleanest and best look.

As always, we will carefully review your order details/photos to make sure everything looks good. We will also contact you with any questions and to verify measurements.
