Cordless Cellular Shades & Blinds

Cellular shades and cordless lift are made for each other. A cellular shade folds into a compact stack of light pleats, so a spring in the headrail can balance it without a cord, a chain or a wand. You lift the bottom rail or pull it down and it stays where you leave it. There is nothing hanging at the window for a toddler or a cat to reach, and nothing to tangle on the sill. Every cordless cellular shade and blind here is made to the width and height you measure and shipped direct to you.

Light filtering or blackout cellular

We build our cellular shades in a 38 mm cell, about 1 1/2 inches, in two fabric families. Light filtering cellular lets daylight through the fabric as a soft glow, which suits living rooms, kitchens and home offices where you want the room bright but not on show. Blackout cellular is the one for bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms, where the job is darkness rather than glow.

The 38 mm cell also comes in textured fabrics, some with a fabric-wrapped headrail so the top of the shade matches the pleats, and in a cell-in-cell construction with a second cell inside the first. If you want daylight over the top of the window with privacy below, cordless also works on a top down bottom up cellular shade, where a second rail lets you lower the top while the bottom stays closed.

Cordless is also priced differently on cellular. On most of our shades cordless is a separate upgrade. On cellular it is built into the price per square foot, so there is no cordless line on your order.

The size range cordless covers

Cordless is the most forgiving lift on a small window and the most limited on a big one. A standard cordless cellular shade starts at just 12 inches wide and 12 inches high, where bead chain needs 18 inches of width and a motor needs 23. On a top down bottom up cordless shade the minimum height drops to 8 inches, handy for a short transom or a basement pane.

At the top end, standard cordless reaches 94 inches wide and 94 inches high, and top down bottom up cordless reaches 98 inches wide by 94 high. The limit comes from the spring, which has to balance the full weight of the stack across its whole travel. If your window is bigger than that, bead chain takes our cellular shades to 197 inches wide and 157 inches high, or a wide opening can be split into two cordless shades that match.

Measuring and fitting cordless cellular yourself

For an inside mount, measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the frame and use the smallest figure, then measure the height on both sides and use the smaller of those too. We take about 1/4 inch off the width so the shade clears the frame. For an outside mount, add about 3 7/8 inches to both the width and the height so the shade overlaps the opening and closes down the light around its edges. You can add more overlap if you prefer, or keep the exact size if the wall space is tight.

If drilling is not an option, a no-drill mount is available for our cellular shades, which suits a rental or a frame you would rather not mark.

Cordless cellular shades read best when every window in a room stops at the same height, so measure each opening on its own but order them together in one fabric and color. A white or light neutral cell looks tidy from the street, while a warmer tone on the room side sits comfortably against wood floors and painted trim.
