Honeycomb shades get the name from their shape. Look at one from the side and you see rows of six sided cells stacked like a honeycomb, formed by bonding pleated fabric back to back. Honeycomb shades and cellular shades are the same product under two names, so if you have been comparing the two, you have been comparing one thing.

The cells are not decoration. Each one holds a pocket of still air between the room and the glass, and still air is a poor conductor of heat. That is why a honeycomb shade keeps a room warmer in winter and cooler in summer than a flat fabric shade of the same color, and why it also deadens outside noise a little. The pleats collapse into a tidy stack when the shade is raised, so a honeycomb shade hides itself better at the top of a window than almost anything else.
