Find your solution
A cold window is easy to spot in winter. The room feels fine until you sit near the glass, and then the chill comes off the pane. Insulated roman shades and blinds give that window a fabric layer that closes completely over the glass when lowered and stacks into soft folds when raised, so you can cover the cold at night and still open the room to daylight. This page groups the roman shades we make that suit that job: fabric romans in fully blackout cloth, light filtering romans for rooms that need daylight, and natural woven wood romans with an attached liner.
Which roman shades to choose for a cold window
Blackout roman shades are the first choice for bedrooms and any room where you lower the shade at night. The fabric is fully blackout, so the glass is closed off behind a solid face of cloth. There are 30 colors to choose from.
Light filtering roman shades suit living rooms, dining rooms and offices where you want the shade down on a gray afternoon without losing the light. They come in 32 colors.
Woven wood shades fold like a roman and bring natural texture, but an unlined weave is about 50% see-through. For a cold window, add a liner. A light filtering liner brings the openness to about 70%, and a blackout liner makes the shade 100% blackout. The blackout liner comes in nine colors. When you add a liner, the valance gets it too, so the whole front reads as one finished piece.
Sizes, liners and lift options
Our fabric roman shades are built on a squared cassette only, which gives a clean, boxed top. Before you order a very wide or very small fabric roman, send us your sizes and we will confirm the build for that window.
Woven wood romans have clear limits. The maximum width is 96 inches on every lift system. For a wider window, we can put more than one shade on a single headrail, up to 118 inches in total, though a shared valance still stops at 96 inches. Cordless woven wood goes to 106 inches high, while clutch, wand and motorized lifts go to 118 inches.
Liners come two ways. An attached liner is fixed behind the woven face and is the simplest choice. A movable liner runs as its own layer with its own control, so you can lower just the liner at night. Movable liners need a deeper headrail, about 3 1/8 inches, and cannot be combined with top down bottom up.
For motorized woven wood, the standard DC motor fits windows from 12 3/4 inches wide, while the lithium and plug-in motors need at least 25 1/4 inches.
Measuring and installing them yourself
For an inside mount woven wood shade, measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the frame and use the smallest number, rounded down to the nearest 1/8 inch. Measure the height on both sides the same way. Check the depth too: you need at least 1 5/8 inches of frame depth, and 2 5/8 inches for the shade to sit flush. Send us your exact numbers and we take the width deduction at the factory.
Fabric roman shades hang from cassette brackets. Each bracket has four pre-drilled holes. Two screws on opposite sides hold a bracket on a standard wall, and the extra holes are there for a heavy or wide shade. Use a 0.2 inch (6 mm) bit and pick the anchor that matches your wall, drywall or masonry. Hook the groove at the top of the valance onto the bracket latch and press it back until it clicks, then check that both the top and rear are locked before you let go.
One note on rooms: natural woven wood is not a good fit for bathrooms or other humid rooms, where moisture can warp the weave. Choose a fabric roman there instead.
A roman shade that closes fully over the glass makes a cold room more comfortable, and it looks finished when raised. Order samples, send your measurements, and we will make each shade to size and ship it direct to your door.

How do I measure for my shades?
Choose an inside or outside mount first, then follow our shade measuring guide. Measure each window individually before entering your width and height on the product page.
Should I choose light filtering or blackout?
Light filtering fabric softens daylight. Blackout fabric blocks light through the fabric itself, while light can still enter around the edges. Your mount and any side tracks affect the final result. Solar and unlined woven fabrics have different privacy characteristics, so check the product details.
Can I add a motor?
Open the product configurator to see the controls and motor options offered for that shade. Motor and smart-home compatibility vary by product and the motor you select.
