The window is where a warm room loses its comfort first when the weather turns. Bare glass feels chilly to sit beside, and a thin covering does little more than hide the view. Insulated shades and blinds put a fuller layer of fabric across the glass and cover it as completely as the opening allows. This page gathers the Coverly shades built with the most material between you and the pane, so you can choose one for a drafty bedroom, a north facing living room or a big window that never quite warms up.

Which shades and blinds to choose for a colder room

Cellular shades are the core of this collection. Each shade is built from a run of fabric cells, the honeycomb shape the shade is named for. On our 38 mm cell size you can also choose a cell-in-cell construction, which sets a second cell inside the first for an extra layer of fabric. Blackout cellular suits a bedroom you want dark and snug. Light filtering cellular keeps daylight in a living space while still covering the glass.

Blackout roller shades use the heaviest fabrics in our roller range. Most of the 100 percent blackout series weigh 300 to 430 grams per square meter, while many light filtering fabrics weigh under 200.

Blackout roman shades hang as a smooth panel when lowered and gather into folds when raised, which gives a bedroom or den a softer, more tailored feel than a roller.

Woven wood shades bring natural texture, and a blackout liner closes off the open weave completely. When you choose a liner, both the shade and the valance are lined. Keep woven wood out of bathrooms and other humid rooms, since prolonged moisture can warp natural fibers.

Size limits and covering the whole window

A shade can only cover the glass it fits, so size and mount matter as much as fabric. Gaps at the edges leave part of the pane exposed. On cellular, an outside mount adds about 3 7/8 inches to both width and height so the shade overlaps the frame on every side.

Cordless cellular builds from 12 inches wide up to 94 inches wide and 94 inches high. Bead chain cellular in the 38 mm cell reaches 197 inches wide and 157 inches high. Motorized cellular in the 38 mm and 45 mm cells needs at least 23 inches of width and tops out at 79 inches high.

Blackout roller fabric is milled on narrower rolls than light filtering, so blackout rollers reach 94 1/2 inches wide on our squared cassette and 86 inches on the others. Any roller over 100 inches high moves to the larger cassette and a heavier tube, which carries it to 118 inches wide and 120 inches high.

Woven wood tops out at 96 inches wide on every lift system. For a wider opening, two shades share one headrail up to 118 inches in total. Cordless woven wood reaches 106 inches high, while clutch and motorized versions reach 118.

Measuring and installing it yourself

For the fullest coverage on a cold window, an outside mount on the wall or casing is usually the better choice. For an inside mount on cellular, the shade is built about 1/4 inch narrower than the opening to clear the frame.

For woven wood, measure the width at the top, center and bottom and use the smallest, rounded down to the nearest 1/8 inch. Do the same for height on each side. The frame needs at least 1 5/8 inches of depth, or 2 5/8 inches for a flush fit. Send exact measurements; the factory applies its own 1/4 inch width deduction.

Roller and roman shades hang from a cassette bracket. You need a 6 mm drill bit, and two anchor types come in the box, one for drywall and one for masonry. Hook the valance groove onto the bracket latch, press back until it clicks, and check that both the top and rear have locked before you let go.

How do I measure for my shades?

Choose an inside or outside mount first, then follow our shade measuring guide. Measure each window individually before entering your width and height on the product page.

Should I choose light filtering or blackout?

Light filtering fabric softens daylight. Blackout fabric blocks light through the fabric itself, while light can still enter around the edges. Your mount and any side tracks affect the final result. Solar and unlined woven fabrics have different privacy characteristics, so check the product details.

Can I add a motor?

Open the product configurator to see the controls and motor options offered for that shade. Motor and smart-home compatibility vary by product and the motor you select.
