Find your solution

Japandi rooms borrow restraint from Scandinavian design and warmth from Japanese interiors: low furniture, pale wood, linen, paper, stone, a muted palette and very little clutter. Windows matter more than usual in a room like that, because there is so little else on the walls. A busy pattern, a bulky valance or a tangle of cords breaks the calm, but a bare window leaves you with glare in the afternoon and no privacy at night. Japandi shades and blinds should read as quiet planes of natural texture, filter the light softly and disappear when they are raised. Every shade here is made to the width and height you measure and shipped direct to your door.

Shades and blinds that suit a Japandi room

Woven wood shades bring the natural fiber that defines the style. Choose a tight bamboo or bamboo and paper weave in a pale or whitewashed tone, and a flat fold so the shade hangs in one crisp plane when lowered. Unlined, a woven shade is roughly half see-through; a light filtering liner gives soft privacy, and a blackout liner suits a bedroom.

Light filtering roller shades are the most minimal option, a single flat panel of fabric in a slim cassette. Muted textured fabrics such as Canyon Linen, Alabaster Grain, Fogstone, Oyster Shell and Stone Husk sit well with pale oak and plaster walls. Light filtering roman shades in the same fabrics add soft, even folds for a bedroom or reading corner. Wood blinds give fine horizontal lines of real wood for a study or a dining room.

For a Japandi bedroom that has to go fully dark, ZeroGlow is a cordless blackout cellular shade held in an edge-to-edge frame that presses into the window opening without drilling. Its frame keeps the window edge clean, and the fabric comes in calm tones including White, Beige, Light Gray and Straw, with Black and Dark Gray for a moodier room.

Sizes and details to know

Woven wood shades are built up to 96 inches wide on every lift system. Cordless woven wood starts at 19 3/4 inches wide and reaches 106 inches high, while clutch loop and motorized versions reach 118 inches high. Two or more woven shades can share one headrail up to 118 inches in total for a wide window, though a single common valance stops at 96 inches. Light filtering roller fabric reaches 96 inches wide on most cassettes, and a fabric on a narrower roll can set a lower limit. Any roller over 100 inches high moves to a larger tube and cassette.

ZeroGlow is a 25 mm cellular shade made to your opening in inches or millimetres, with a choice of six fabric colors and three frame colors. You also choose whether it travels up and down the glass or side to side, which suits a wide, low window as well as a standard one.

Measuring and installing them yourself

For an inside mount woven wood shade, measure the width at the top, center and bottom and use the smallest, rounded down to the nearest 1/8 inch, then measure the height on each side and use the smaller figure. The frame needs at least 1 5/8 inches of depth to mount inside and 2 5/8 inches to sit flush; give us exact numbers and the factory takes 1/4 inch off the width. Roller and roman cassettes clip onto brackets screwed through at least two of four holes on opposite sides; press the valance back until it clicks and check that the top and rear are both locked.

ZeroGlow needs no drill at all. Join the frame corners on a soft, flat surface, run the rubber weather strip around the outside edges, then set the frame in the window opening and press the front into place.

Keep the palette tight: one fabric tone across a room, and natural texture over pattern. Order samples, look at them against your wood and plaster in morning and evening light, and send us your measurements.

How do I measure for my shades?

Choose an inside or outside mount first, then follow our shade measuring guide. Measure each window individually before entering your width and height on the product page.

Should I choose light filtering or blackout?

Light filtering fabric softens daylight. Blackout fabric blocks light through the fabric itself, while light can still enter around the edges. Your mount and any side tracks affect the final result. Solar and unlined woven fabrics have different privacy characteristics, so check the product details.

Can I add a motor?

Open the product configurator to see the controls and motor options offered for that shade. Motor and smart-home compatibility vary by product and the motor you select.
