The laundry room is a working space, and its window has a job to do. It lets in daylight so you can spot stains and sort colors, but it often faces a side yard or a neighbor's window, and it sits in a room that gets warm and steamy when the dryer runs. Laundry room windows also tend to be small, set high, or tucked behind a washer and dryer where they are hard to reach. This page gathers the made to measure shades that suit that mix of needs.

Shade and blind options for a laundry room

Light filtering roller shades are the everyday choice. They soften daylight without shutting it out, so the room stays bright enough to work in while the view in from outside is cut off. The fabrics are 100% polyester, and the shade rolls up tight into a cassette at the top of the window, leaving the sill and the space above the machines clear.

Solar shades suit a laundry room that takes the afternoon sun. The screen is a poly and PVC weave in openness levels from 1% to 10%. The lower the openness, the more light the screen blocks, and every level keeps some view out. Blackout roller shades are the pick when the room doubles as a mudroom beside a bedroom, or when you simply want the window fully closed.

Light filtering roman shades bring a softer, folded look when the laundry room is on show, for example off the kitchen or the entry. We have left woven wood off this page. Natural fibres are not suited to humid rooms, and prolonged moisture warps the weave.

Small windows and awkward reach

A roller shade with a chain can be made as narrow as 11 3/4 inches wide, which suits most small laundry windows. Cordless shades on our squared cassette need at least 23 5/8 inches, and motorized shades need around 20 inches or more because the motor sits inside the tube, so check your width before you choose how the shade will operate.

If the window sits behind the washer and dryer or over a utility sink, reaching a chain every day gets old quickly. A motorized shade runs from a remote, a wall switch or an app, and works with Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomePod. The motors use a rechargeable battery that charges in about four hours, and we recommend a six hour charge every six months even if the shade is rarely used. A powerwand is the middle ground: a rechargeable wand that raises and lowers the shade with no cord.

If the window has a crank handle, ask for a reverse roll. It hangs the fabric off the front of the tube so it clears the handle.

Measuring and installing it yourself

For an inside mount, measure the width of the opening at the top, middle and bottom and use the smallest figure, then measure the height on both sides and use the smaller one. Send us the exact numbers and we make the deductions at the factory. If the frame is too shallow or uneven, mount the shade on the wall above the window instead.

You will need a drill with a 6 mm (0.2 inch) bit. Each bracket has four pre-drilled holes, and two screws on opposite sides are enough on a sound wall. Use the extra holes on a weak wall or a wide shade. The box includes anchors for drywall and for masonry. Hook the cassette onto the bracket latch, press it back until it clicks, and check that it is locked at both the top and the rear before you let go.
