Master Bedroom Shades & Blinds

The master bedroom asks more of its windows than any other room. It is where you sleep, so it has to go properly dark. It is usually the largest bedroom, so the windows run wider, sometimes with a slider onto a deck. And it is the room you furnish for yourself rather than for guests, so the shade has to look like it belongs. Most people want two things from the same window: daylight and a view in the morning, then darkness and privacy at night. Every shade here is made to the size you measure and shipped direct to you.

Shades and blinds that suit a master bedroom

Woven wood shades bring natural texture in bamboo, jute, reed and other natural fibers, and they handle the day and night problem better than anything else we make. On its own a woven shade is roughly 50% see-through. Add a light filtering liner for about 70%, or a blackout liner for full blackout, with nine colors in each. If you want both in one window, choose a movable liner: the woven face and the liner run as two separate layers with their own controls, so the weave can be down by day and the liner down at night.

Blackout and light filtering roman shades give soft horizontal folds that make a bedroom feel furnished rather than equipped. Blackout roller shades use fabrics rated at 100% blackout and roll up into a compact cassette when raised. Blackout cellular shades add a top down bottom up option, lowering from the top to bring daylight in over the bed while the lower half stays closed.

Wide windows, movable liners and motors

Woven wood reaches 96 inches wide on every lift system. A wider run takes multiple shades on one headrail, up to 118 inches in total, though a shared valance still stops at 96 inches. A movable liner needs a deeper headrail, about 3 1/8 inches, and cannot be combined with top down bottom up, so decide which of the two matters more before you order.

Blackout roller fabric reaches 94 1/2 inches wide and 118 inches high on our standard squared cassette. Anything taller than 100 inches moves to the large cassette with a 43 mm tube, which reaches 118 inches wide and 120 inches high. Cordless top down bottom up cellular runs from 12 inches wide up to 98 inches wide and 94 inches high.

A motor is what lets you close the room from bed. Each motor stores six positions, and the AC152-06 remote has a built-in timer, so the shades can drop at the same time every night. On Apple devices, the Matter motor connects to HomePod directly. The Zigbee motor reaches five specific Echo devices with no hub, and everything else runs through a hub. Motorized cellular caps at 79 inches high, and a motorized roller needs 8 to 10 inches more minimum width than a manual one.

Measuring and installing them yourself

Measure every window separately, including pairs that look identical. For woven wood, measure the width at the top, middle and bottom and use the smallest figure rounded down to the nearest 1/8 inch, then do the same for height. Send exact measurements, since the factory takes the 1/4 inch deduction. Check the frame depth too: woven wood needs at least 1 5/8 inches to mount inside and 2 5/8 inches to sit flush. For the darkest result on cellular, mount outside and add about 3 7/8 inches to width and height so the shade overlaps the frame.

Roller and roman shades hang from a cassette bracket fixed with a 6 mm drill bit, with drywall and masonry anchors both in the box. Hook the valance groove onto the bracket latch, press back until it clicks, and check that the top and rear have both locked before you let go.

For a calm master bedroom, match the shade or liner to the wall color rather than the trim, so a closed shade reads as part of the room. Keep one texture across every window, and order samples to see the weave and liner colors in your own morning light.
