Modern rooms leave a window nowhere to hide. Clean walls, flat trim and a pared back palette mean a fussy treatment stands out, but bare glass brings glare in the afternoon and a black mirror at night. A modern roman shade solves both: it folds into crisp, even pleats when raised and drops into one flat panel of fabric when lowered, so it softens the room without adding clutter. These shades and blinds are made to measure for your window, which is what keeps the lines tight.

Roman shades that suit a modern room

Light Filtering Roman Shades are the everyday choice for living rooms, kitchens and home offices. They take the hard edge off direct sun and keep the room bright, and the range runs to 32 colors, from soft whites like Ivory Shimmer and Alba Weave through warm neutrals like Canyon Sand and Wheat Glow to darker tones like Midnight Shimmer and Deep Nebula.

Blackout Roman Shades bring the same folded look to bedrooms and media rooms where the light has to go. The blackout range has 30 colors, including a set of linen textures (Cloud Linen, Sand Linen, Dark Linen and Black Linen) that read as natural fabric while blocking light completely.

For a modern scheme, keep to one solid color per room and let the pleats provide the texture. White or pale grey disappears against a white wall; charcoal or black makes the window a deliberate graphic shape, which works well against warm wood floors.

Cassettes, colors and lift options

Every Coverly roman shade is built on a squared cassette rather than an open headrail, which is a large part of why it looks clean. Two cassettes are used: a 3 1/2 inch square profile and a slimmer 2 15/16 inch profile. The smaller one keeps more glass visible on a low or narrow window. Cassettes come in white, beige, grey and black, so you can match the trim or the fabric rather than living with a stock finish.

You choose the lift when you order. A clutch loop with a bead chain is the base option. Cordless removes the chain entirely, which suits a modern room because nothing hangs at the side of the window, and it adds a flat $38 per shade. A rechargeable power wand and full motorization with remote, wall switch or app control are also available; smart motors work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomePod. Motorized shades need more width than manual ones, because the motor has to fit inside the headrail, so check your narrowest windows before choosing a motor for every room.

Measuring and installing it yourself

Decide on inside or outside mount first. An inside mount sits within the window frame and gives the cleanest modern look; an outside mount covers the frame and can be set a few inches above it to make the window read taller. For an inside mount, measure the width at the top, middle and bottom and use the smallest figure, then measure the height on both sides and use the smaller. Give us exact measurements to the nearest 1/8 inch and the shade is built from those figures.

Installation uses one bracket system for both mounts. Drill with a 6 mm (0.2 inch) bit and pick the anchor that matches your wall, since both drywall and masonry anchors are in the box. Each bracket has four pre-drilled holes: two screws on opposite sides are enough on a sound wall, and the extra two are there for a weak wall, a wide shade or a spot over a stairwell. Hook the groove at the top of the cassette onto the bracket latch, press it back until it clicks, and check that both the top and rear are locked before you let go. To take it down later, press the metal washer at the back of the bracket rather than prying the front.

A modern roman shade is a small change that makes a room feel finished. Order a few fabric samples, hold them against your wall by day and by night, and choose the one that suits the room. It arrives made to your measurements and shipped direct to your door.

How do I measure for my shades?

Choose an inside or outside mount first, then follow our shade measuring guide. Measure each window individually before entering your width and height on the product page.

Should I choose light filtering or blackout?

Light filtering fabric softens daylight. Blackout fabric blocks light through the fabric itself, while light can still enter around the edges. Your mount and any side tracks affect the final result. Solar and unlined woven fabrics have different privacy characteristics, so check the product details.

Can I add a motor?

Open the product configurator to see the controls and motor options offered for that shade. Motor and smart-home compatibility vary by product and the motor you select.
