A bedroom window has to work at both ends of the day. At night it should go dark and private, and in the morning it should let in soft light without putting the bed on view from the street. Roman shades and blinds for bedrooms do both while adding something a flat shade does not: a tailored fabric face that folds into neat, even pleats when you raise it, so the window looks finished whether the shade is up or down. Every shade is made to the width and height you measure and shipped direct to you.
Roman shade options for a bedroom
Blackout roman shades are the first choice for a main bedroom or anyone who sleeps past sunrise. The fabric blocks light fully, so the only light you notice is the thin line around the edges, which the mounting advice below helps with. There are 30 blackout colors, from soft whites and linens to deep charcoal and black.
Light filtering roman shades suit a bedroom you also use during the day, a reading corner, or a window over a desk. The fabric glows softly with the shade down and still screens the view in, so the room stays private and bright at the same time. There are 32 light filtering colors, including linen weaves and subtle shimmer finishes.
Woven wood shades bring natural texture to a bedroom with wood floors, rattan or linen bedding. The flat fold style hangs in a crisp flat plane like a classic roman shade. On its own the weave is roughly 50 percent see-through, so for a bedroom add a light filtering liner for daytime privacy or a blackout liner for a fully dark room.
Lifts, motors and cassette depth
Our fabric roman shades are built in a squared cassette, either 3 1/2 inches or 2 15/16 inches square, so check that the frame or wall above the window has room for it. Choose the lift that fits how you use the room:
- Cordless: no loose cords, so it is child and pet safe and keeps the bedside tidy.
- Bead chain: a continuous chain with a chain tensioner included as standard.
- Motorized: battery or plug-in power, with a remote, a wall switch or an app.
For smart homes, a Matter motor connects directly to Apple Home and also works with Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant. A Zigbee motor connects without a hub to five specific Echo devices, and a standard motor reaches voice assistants through a hub. Each motor stores two end limits and up to four intermediate stops, so you can save a favorite half-open position. The black six-channel remote supports timed control, which lets the shades close at bedtime and open with your alarm. A battery motor charges in about four hours and should be charged for at least six hours every six months, even when it has plenty left.
Measuring and installing them yourself
Decide on an inside or outside mount first. An inside mount sits within the frame and looks clean against the trim. An outside mount covers the frame and overlaps the opening, which cuts the light gap at the edges, so it is the better choice when darkness matters most. Measure every window on its own, even pairs that look identical, and note which wall each size belongs to.
Fabric roman shades hang on two cassette brackets. Drill with a 6 mm (0.2 inch) bit, set the screws at 1.1 inch spacing, and pick the anchor that matches your wall, drywall or masonry. Each bracket has four pre-drilled holes; two screws on opposite sides hold it on a standard wall. Hook the valance groove onto the bracket latch, press it back until it clicks, and check that both the top and rear are locked before you let go.
For a restful bedroom, pick a shade color close to the wall rather than the trim, and keep the same fabric on every bedroom window so the room reads as one calm space. Order a fabric sample to see the color against your walls in morning and evening light before you send us your sizes.

How do I measure for my shades?
Choose an inside or outside mount first, then follow our shade measuring guide. Measure each window individually before entering your width and height on the product page.
Should I choose light filtering or blackout?
Light filtering fabric softens daylight. Blackout fabric blocks light through the fabric itself, while light can still enter around the edges. Your mount and any side tracks affect the final result. Solar and unlined woven fabrics have different privacy characteristics, so check the product details.
Can I add a motor?
Open the product configurator to see the controls and motor options offered for that shade. Motor and smart-home compatibility vary by product and the motor you select.
