A nursery window has a hard job. Babies nap in the middle of the afternoon and go to bed while it is still light out in summer, so the room needs to go dark on demand. It also needs to be safe, with nothing a curious toddler can pull or tangle in. Roman shades and blinds for nurseries cover both, and they give the room a soft, finished look that a plain shade does not. Every shade on this page is made to the width and height you measure and shipped direct to you.

Roman shade options for a nursery

Blackout roman shades are the one most parents choose for a nursery. The fabric blocks light fully, so a daytime nap room can be made dark, and early summer sunrises stay outside. There are 30 blackout colors, including soft whites, warm linens, a dusty rose and calm greys, which makes it easy to match the shade to the nursery palette without giving up darkness.

Light filtering roman shades suit a playroom corner, a nursery for an older child who naps less, or a second window in the room where some daylight is welcome. They soften the light and keep the view in private. Many parents put blackout on the window nearest the crib and light filtering on the others.

Cordless, motorized and safe lift choices

Lift choice matters more in a nursery than in any other room. Cordless roman shades have no loose cords, so they are child and pet safe and there is nothing hanging within reach of the crib or a changing table. If you choose a bead chain, it comes with a chain tensioner as standard.

A motorized roman shade removes the cord question entirely and lets you lower the shade without walking past a sleeping baby. Choose battery or plug-in power, and a remote, a wall switch or an app. The black six-channel remote supports timed control, so the shade can close for nap time and open in the morning on a schedule. Each motor stores two end limits and up to four intermediate stops, so a half-open setting for playtime is one button away. A battery motor charges in about four hours, and it should be charged for at least six hours every six months to keep the battery healthy.

Our fabric roman shades are built in a squared cassette, either 3 1/2 inches or 2 15/16 inches square, so check that the frame or the wall above the window has room for it.

Measuring and installing them yourself

For the darkest nursery, mount the shade outside the frame so it overlaps the opening on each side. That covers the thin gap where light slips past an inside mount. An inside mount sits within the frame and looks neater, which is fine on a window away from the crib. Measure each window on its own and note which wall it is on.

Fabric roman shades hang on two cassette brackets. Drill with a 6 mm (0.2 inch) bit, set the screws at 1.1 inch spacing, and use the anchor that matches your wall. Each bracket has four pre-drilled holes, and in a child's room it is worth using all four. Hook the valance groove onto the latch, press back until it clicks, and check that the top and rear are both locked before you let go.

Nurseries change as children grow, so a neutral shade color that suits the walls will outlast the wallpaper and the decals. Order a blackout fabric sample and hold it up at nap time to see how dark it gets before you send us your sizes.

How do I measure for my shades?

Choose an inside or outside mount first, then follow our shade measuring guide. Measure each window individually before entering your width and height on the product page.

Should I choose light filtering or blackout?

Light filtering fabric softens daylight. Blackout fabric blocks light through the fabric itself, while light can still enter around the edges. Your mount and any side tracks affect the final result. Solar and unlined woven fabrics have different privacy characteristics, so check the product details.

Can I add a motor?

Open the product configurator to see the controls and motor options offered for that shade. Motor and smart-home compatibility vary by product and the motor you select.
