Bedroom windows are where light control matters most, and not every bedroom window is a neat double hung. Wide windows, a slider out to a balcony, or a long low run of glass along one wall are often easier to cover with vertical blinds than with one oversized shade. This page is for that bedroom: it pairs our made-to-measure vertical blinds with the blackout shades people compare them against when the real goal is a darker room at night and a later wake-up in summer.
Vertical blinds and blackout options for the bedroom
Vertical blinds lead this page. You choose the size and configuration for each window on the product page, and each blind is made to your measurements. They suit a bedroom with a wide window or a door to a deck, where one oversized shade would be awkward.
Blackout roller shades are the comparison for anyone whose first priority is sleep. A blackout fabric in a cassette gives a clean, flat panel when lowered.
Light filtering roller shades are here for the bedroom that is used in the day too, such as a guest room or a room that doubles as an office, where you want privacy and softened light rather than full darkness.
ZeroGlow blackout shades are the option for a standard bedroom window when you want it fully dark. ZeroGlow is a cordless blackout cellular shade held in an edge-to-edge frame that presses into the window opening, so there is no drilling, which also makes it a good fit for a rental bedroom.
A few design notes. In a bedroom, soft whites, warm grays and muted neutrals tend to feel calmer than bright colors at the window. If you use vertical blinds on a wide window and a shade on a smaller one in the same room, keep the colors matched so the two read as a set. Dark colors make a window recede at night, which many people like in a room meant for sleep.
Sizing and specifications
Size limits and configuration options for our vertical blinds are set on the product page as you build the blind, so check them there for your window. If a bedroom window is unusually wide or tall, send us the measurements and we will confirm what can be made.
Roller shade limits are documented. On our standard cassette, blackout roller shades reach 94 1/2 inches wide and 118 inches high, while light filtering roller shades reach 98 3/8 inches wide and 137 3/4 inches high. Blackout fabrics run narrower because they are milled on narrower rolls. A cordless roller shade needs at least 23 5/8 inches of width and a motorized one at least 20 1/8 inches, while a manual chain shade starts at 11 3/4 inches. ZeroGlow is made to the opening you measure, in inches or millimeters, and you choose six fabric colors, three frame colors, and up-and-down or side-to-side travel.
Measuring and installing them yourself
Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the opening and the height on both sides, and note every figure. Send us the exact opening and let us make any deductions. Measure each bedroom window on its own, even if two look identical.
Roller shades mount on a cassette bracket: screw each bracket through at least two of its four pre-drilled holes on opposite sides, hook the valance groove onto the latch, and press back until it clicks, then check both the top and rear are locked. ZeroGlow needs no tools in the wall. Join the frame corners on a soft, flat surface, fit the rubber weather strip around the outside edges, and press the frame into the window opening.
A bedroom should be easy to darken and easy to open up in the morning. Compare vertical blinds with blackout and light filtering shades here, then send your sizes and we will make each one to measure and ship it direct to your door.

How do I measure for my shades?
Choose an inside or outside mount first, then follow our shade measuring guide. Measure each window individually before entering your width and height on the product page.
Should I choose light filtering or blackout?
Light filtering fabric softens daylight. Blackout fabric blocks light through the fabric itself, while light can still enter around the edges. Your mount and any side tracks affect the final result. Solar and unlined woven fabrics have different privacy characteristics, so check the product details.
Can I add a motor?
Open the product configurator to see the controls and motor options offered for that shade. Motor and smart-home compatibility vary by product and the motor you select.
