A bedroom window has to work at two very different times of day. In the morning you want daylight and a glimpse of the street or garden; at night you want privacy and, for many people, a properly dark room. Wood and faux wood blinds bring a warmth to a bedroom that flat fabric does not, the look of natural grain or a clean painted finish running across the glass. This page pairs our made-to-measure wood and faux wood blinds with the blackout shades they are most often weighed against, so you can choose the bedroom look first and the light level second.

Blinds for the look, shades for the dark

Wood blinds lead the page. They suit bedrooms with wood floors, a timber bed frame or other natural materials, where real wood ties the window into the rest of the furniture.

Faux wood blinds give the same horizontal profile at the window and are a natural fit for a guest room or a kids' room, or for a home where you want the same blind look on every bedroom window.

Blackout cellular shades and blackout roller shades are here for the bedroom where darkness matters most: a street-facing room, a nursery or a room used for daytime sleep.

A few design notes. White blinds read crisp and bright against pale walls and white trim, and they suit coastal and modern bedrooms. Mid and dark wood tones feel warmer and sit well beside a wood headboard or dresser; match the tone of the largest wood piece in the room rather than the floor. Keep every window in one bedroom in the same finish so the room feels calm.

Sizes and operating options for bedroom windows

For wood and faux wood blinds, check the size and control options on each blinds product page as you configure them.

A cordless blackout cellular shade builds from 12 inches wide and 12 inches high up to 94 by 94 inches, which covers most bedroom windows, and the cordless lift leaves no loose cords at the window. For a larger window, a bead chain cellular shade starts at 18 inches wide and reaches 197 inches wide and 157 inches high. Motorized cellular needs at least 23 inches of width and stops at 79 inches high, so check both numbers before choosing a motor for a tall window.

Blackout roller shades on our standard squared cassette reach 94 1/2 inches wide and 118 inches high. The minimum width is 11 3/4 inches with a clutch loop, 20 1/8 inches motorized and 23 5/8 inches cordless. A motorized roller shade runs from a remote, a wall switch or an app, and with a hub it works with Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomePod, so you can close the room from bed.

Measuring and installing them yourself

Measure every window on its own. Take the width at the top, middle and bottom and the height on both sides, and write every number down. For a cellular shade mounted inside the frame, take 1/4 inch off the smallest width so the shade clears the frame. For the darkest result, consider an outside mount: the usual allowance is about 3 7/8 inches added to both width and height, so the shade overlaps the glass and cuts light at the edges. For an inside-mount roller shade, send us the exact opening and the deduction is applied when the shade is made.

Roller shades hang on a cassette bracket. Screw it through at least two of its four pre-drilled holes, on opposite sides, with a 6 mm (0.2 inch) bit, hook the valance groove onto the bracket latch, and press it back until it clicks. Check that the top and rear are both locked before you let go.

The right bedroom window is warm by day and quiet by night. Choose wood or faux wood blinds for the look, add a blackout shade where you need the dark, send us the size of each window, and we will make every one to measure and ship it direct to your door.

How do I measure for my shades?

Choose an inside or outside mount first, then follow our shade measuring guide. Measure each window individually before entering your width and height on the product page.

Should I choose light filtering or blackout?

Light filtering fabric softens daylight. Blackout fabric blocks light through the fabric itself, while light can still enter around the edges. Your mount and any side tracks affect the final result. Solar and unlined woven fabrics have different privacy characteristics, so check the product details.

Can I add a motor?

Open the product configurator to see the controls and motor options offered for that shade. Motor and smart-home compatibility vary by product and the motor you select.
