An unlined bamboo shade is beautiful in daylight and surprisingly see-through. The weave is roughly half open, so by day it scatters the sun into a warm, dappled light, and at night, with the lamps on, it shows shapes and movement to anyone outside. A privacy liner is the fix. It is a light filtering backing fixed behind the woven face, so the room keeps the texture of bamboo, jute or reed while the view in is closed off and the light stays soft. Every shade here is made to the width and height you measure and shipped direct to you.
Bamboo shades and blinds with a privacy liner
Every woven material we offer can take a liner, from tight bamboo and bamboo slat weaves to looser jute, flax and ramie. When you add one, both the shade and its valance are lined, so there is no bright strip across the top of the window. The light filtering liner is 100% cotton and comes in nine colors: white, off white, cream, camel, light gray, dark gray, taupe, dark brown and black.
Liner color changes the look from both sides. White or off white reads clean from the street and brightens a pale weave. Camel, taupe or dark brown sits behind a warm jute or deep bamboo without shifting its color.
Light filtering roman shades sit alongside the woven shades on this page for anyone who wants the same soft folds and daytime privacy in a solid fabric rather than a natural weave.
Liner options, privacy levels and size limits
The liner sets the privacy level. With no liner a woven shade is about 50% see-through. A light filtering liner takes it to about 70%, which keeps a room bright while closing the sightline in. If you need a room fully dark, a blackout liner gives 100% blackout instead.
You also choose how the liner is attached. An attached liner is fixed permanently behind the woven face, the clean, simple option for most windows. A movable liner is a second layer that raises and lowers separately, so you can run the bamboo alone on a bright afternoon and lower the liner in the evening. It needs a deeper 3 1/8 inch headrail and cannot be combined with top down bottom up. If you would rather have daylight over the top and privacy at eye level, choose a top down bottom up shade with an attached liner.
Woven shades are built up to 96 inches wide on every lift system. A cordless shade runs from 19 3/4 inches wide and from 18 to 106 inches high, while clutch loop and motorized shades reach 118 inches high, and clutch loop starts at just 11 3/4 inches wide. For a wide opening, two or more shades can share one headrail up to 118 inches in total, though a single common valance stops at 96 inches. Some looser weaves need a narrow edge binding, about 1/2 inch on the face, so the cut edge does not fray. Natural fibers do not like humidity, so choose a fabric shade for a bathroom.
Measuring and installing it yourself
For an inside mount, measure the width at the top, center and bottom of the opening and use the smallest, rounded down to the nearest 1/8 inch. Measure the height on each side with your back to the wall and use the smaller figure, then measure the frame depth. A woven shade needs at least 1 5/8 inches of depth to mount inside and about 2 5/8 inches to sit flush, or 2 1/8 inches on cordless. A movable liner needs more, around 3 3/4 inches for a flush cordless twin. Send us exact numbers and the factory takes the 1/4 inch width deduction itself.
The shade hangs on compact brackets, 1 3/8 inches high and 1 3/4 inches wide, with 1/2 inch of clearance for the fabric.
For a bedroom that needs to go dark, see our blackout bamboo shades. For privacy with daylight, order a woven wood sample, hold it to the glass in morning and evening light, and choose the weave and liner color you like best.

How do I measure for my shades?
Choose an inside or outside mount first, then follow our shade measuring guide. Measure each window individually before entering your width and height on the product page.
Should I choose light filtering or blackout?
Light filtering fabric softens daylight. Blackout fabric blocks light through the fabric itself, while light can still enter around the edges. Your mount and any side tracks affect the final result. Solar and unlined woven fabrics have different privacy characteristics, so check the product details.
Can I add a motor?
Open the product configurator to see the controls and motor options offered for that shade. Motor and smart-home compatibility vary by product and the motor you select.
