A child's bedroom changes job every few years. It starts as a room for early bedtimes and summer naps, turns into a playroom with toys on the windowsill, and ends up as a teenager's room where the window covering has to look grown up. Kids room shades and blinds have to keep up with all of it: dark enough for sleep while it is still light outside, safe with no loose cords near a bed or a toy box, and simple enough that a child can open them in the morning. Every shade here is made to your measurements and shipped direct.

Which shades and blinds work in a kids room

Blackout roller shades are the dependable choice for sleep. Blackout roller fabric stops light passing through the cloth itself, and the roller rolls up inside a closed cassette, so there is no exposed tube at the top of the window. Light filtering rollers suit a playroom, softening the light without dimming the room.

Blackout and light filtering cellular shades add a layer of air at the glass, which helps a small room hold a steady temperature overnight. A cordless cellular shade simply lifts and lowers from the bottom rail.

Zebra shades are a good fit for older kids. Alternating sheer and solid bands let them slide from a soft view during homework to privacy at night without raising the whole shade. Blackout roman shades give the room a softer, tailored look that ages well from early childhood into the teenage years.

For color, the blackout range runs to 30 shades and light filtering to 32. The blackout list includes soft options such as Dusk Rose, Painted Sunset and Moonstone, and deeper tones like Midnight. A neutral shade with a bright bedding set is easy to refresh later; a bold shade becomes the feature of the room.

Cordless sizes and operating options

Cordless means no chain or cord at all, and it has its own size limits. A cordless roller shade on our squared cassette starts at 23 5/8 inches wide, and a cordless zebra shade starts at 19 3/4 inches on the smaller cassette. Cordless cellular shades start at 12 inches wide and reach 94 inches wide and 94 inches high, so they cover most small and awkward bedroom windows.

If a window is narrower than the cordless minimum, a chain operated shade can be made narrower, and every chain shade comes with a chain tensioner as standard to hold the loop taut against the wall. A rechargeable power wand is another option on every roller system. Motorized rollers start at 20 1/8 inches wide and run from a remote, an app or a voice assistant; the six channel time control remote can raise the shades at the same time every school morning.

Measuring and installing it yourself

Decide first whether the shade sits inside the window frame or on the wall above it. For the darkest room, an outside mount that overlaps the opening on every side blocks the light that slips around the edges of an inside mount. For an inside mount, measure the width at the top, middle and bottom and use the smallest figure, then measure the height. Send us those exact numbers; the factory makes its own allowances.

Roller, zebra and roman shades hang from two cassette brackets. Drill with a 0.2 inch (6 mm) bit, set the screws at 1.1 inch spacing, and use the anchor that matches your wall, since both drywall and masonry anchors come in the box. Hook the groove at the top of the valance onto the bracket latch, press it back until it clicks, and check that both the top and the rear are locked before you let go. Each bracket has four pre-drilled holes; two screws on opposite sides hold it on a standard wall, and the spare two are there if the wall is weak or the shade is wide.

If you are setting up a baby's room, our nursery shades and blinds focus on naps and blackout. For a room that needs to grow with your child, order a sample, check the color in daylight and lamplight, and send us your measurements.

Explore shade styles, try fabrics, and see how they move before you choose.

How do I measure for my shades?

Choose an inside or outside mount first, then follow our shade measuring guide. Measure each window individually before entering your width and height on the product page.

Should I choose light filtering or blackout?

Light filtering fabric softens daylight. Blackout fabric blocks light through the fabric itself, while light can still enter around the edges. Your mount and any side tracks affect the final result. Solar and unlined woven fabrics have different privacy characteristics, so check the product details.

Can I add a motor?

Open the product configurator to see the controls and motor options offered for that shade. Motor and smart-home compatibility vary by product and the motor you select.
