Modern Shades & Blinds

Modern rooms are unforgiving about hardware. A flat wall, a square opening and a clean sill leave nowhere for a bulky headrail or a fussy valance to hide, which is why so many contemporary interiors end up with bare glass and a glare problem. The shades here read as part of the wall rather than an object hung on it: a flat fabric plane, a squared cassette, a slim bottom bar, neutral colours.

Which shades suit a modern room

Zebra shades are the most distinctly contemporary thing Coverly builds. Alternating sheer and solid bands slide across each other, so the shade goes from a filtered view to a closed face without changing its profile. It is cassette built only.

Roller shades in light filtering and blackout give the flattest face of any system here. Nothing folds, nothing stacks, and when the shade is up the fabric disappears into the tube.

Solar shades are for rooms where the view is the point. Sunscreen fabrics come at four openness levels, 1, 3, 5 and 10 percent, blocking roughly 80, 70, 60 and 50 percent of the light in turn. A tighter weave cuts more heat and glare, an opener one keeps more view.

Light filtering cellular belongs here for the opposite reason: the honeycomb section does the insulating, with no visible structure on the face. Roman and woven wood are left off deliberately, because soft folds and natural grain are their own look.

Cassettes, bars and the details that show

The cassette is the part a modern room notices. There are three sizes: a squared cassette at 3 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches, a smaller squared or round one at roughly 2 15/16 inches, and a large squared cassette at 4 3/16 inches for oversized shades. Each comes in white, beige, grey or black, and it can be wrapped in the shade fabric so the wall and the shade read as one surface.

Bottom bars come in three profiles, the slimmest at 1 1/16 by 1/2 inch, in the same four colours. On a deep sill, or where a handle sits in the way, ask for reverse roll: the fabric winds the other way round the tube and hangs off the front.

Size is where a large modern window gets specific. Light filtering fabrics reach 96 to 98 3/8 inches wide depending on the system, while blackout and sunscreen stop at 86 to 94 1/2, because the heavier goods are milled on narrower rolls. Anything over 100 inches high moves to the 43 mm tube and the large cassette, which is a requirement, not a preference, and reaches 118 inches wide by 120 high.

Motorisation suits this look: it removes the last visible control. Smart control runs from a remote, a wall switch or an app, and works with Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomePod. A Zigbee motor connects directly to five specific Echo devices with no hub, a Matter motor connects directly to Apple Home, and the plain radio motor needs a hub for either. A motorised shade needs 8 to 10 inches more minimum width, because the motor sits inside the tube.

Measuring and installing it yourself

Measure the opening width at the top, centre and bottom, use the smallest figure rounded down to the nearest 1/8 inch, and repeat for height. Give the exact opening and let the factory apply its own deduction.

The cassette bracket takes a 6 mm drill bit with screw holes at 1.1 inch spacing, and two anchor types are supplied for drywall and masonry. Both brackets have four pre-drilled holes: two screws on opposite sides suit a sound wall, the extra pair a weak substrate or a wide, heavy shade. Hook the valance groove onto the latch, press back until it clicks, and check that the top and rear have both locked. To take the shade down later, press the metal retaining washer at the rear of the bracket, not the front.

Everything here is made to measure and shipped direct, with a limited lifetime warranty against defects and a separate five year warranty on motors. Samples are the fastest way to check a neutral against your own wall.
