Find your solution

Most privacy advice assumes you are happy to sit in the dark. You are not. You want the street, the neighbors or the passing car unable to see in, and you still want daylight across the room at two in the afternoon. That rules out simply closing a blackout shade, and it means choosing a shade by how it handles light rather than how much it blocks. The shades and blinds on this page are the ones in our range that keep a room bright while closing the sightline in, made to measure and shipped direct.

Shades and blinds that give privacy and let light in

Top down bottom up cellular and woven wood solve the problem by position rather than fabric. Two rails move independently, so you can drop the top of the shade to let daylight in over it while the lower half stays closed at eye level. On a street-facing window this is often the whole answer.

Light filtering roller and roman shades pass daylight through the fabric while screening the view. Our light filtering roller fabrics are specified from roughly 45% to 70% shading depending on the series, and that difference is visible: the lower figures read soft and bright, the higher ones read closer to a screen.

Zebra shades adjust privacy without moving the shade. Offset the sheer and solid bands to close the view, line them up to let more light through.

Woven wood with a light filtering liner gives you natural texture and a warm glow. On their own the weaves are about 50% see-through, so the liner is what makes them a privacy shade, and it comes in nine colors.

Solar shades keep the daylight and your view of outside during the day, with openness from 1% at 80% shading to 10% at 50%. Lower openness gives more privacy.

What to check before you choose

Daytime privacy from a light filtering fabric depends on it being brighter outside than in. After dark, with lamps on, the effect reverses and a light fabric or screen can show silhouettes. For a bedroom, pair a light filtering choice with a blackout shade elsewhere in the plan, or pick top down bottom up so the closed lower half does the work.

A few build rules matter here. Woven wood top down bottom up takes an attached liner only; the movable liner system is not compatible with it. A cordless top down bottom up cellular shade starts at 12 inches wide and 8 inches high, so it suits small windows. A motorized top down bottom up shade carries two motors because each rail moves on its own, and motorized cellular caps at 79 inches high.

Light filtering fabrics are also the wider ones. On our standard roller cassettes light filtering reaches 96 inches wide where blackout stops at 86, and woven wood reaches 96 inches on every operating system. Past that, two shades on one headrail cover up to 118 inches on woven wood.

Measuring and installing them yourself

Measure the opening itself, not an old blind, and measure every window separately. For woven wood inside mount, measure width at the top, center and bottom and use the smallest, rounded down to the nearest 1/8 inch; the frame needs at least 1 5/8 inches of depth, or 2 5/8 inches for a flush fit. For cellular, take 1/4 inch off the width for inside mount, or add about 3 7/8 inches to width and height for outside mount.

Roller, zebra and roman shades hang on a cassette bracket. You need a 6 mm drill bit, and two anchor types come in the box so you can match your wall. Hook the valance onto the bracket latch, press it back until it clicks, and check both top and rear are locked.

Order samples and look at them from outside in daylight. The view in from the sidewalk is the one that matters.

A closer look, from every angle.

How do I measure for my shades?

Choose an inside or outside mount first, then follow our shade measuring guide. Measure each window individually before entering your width and height on the product page.

Should I choose light filtering or blackout?

Light filtering fabric softens daylight. Blackout fabric blocks light through the fabric itself, while light can still enter around the edges. Your mount and any side tracks affect the final result. Solar and unlined woven fabrics have different privacy characteristics, so check the product details.

Can I add a motor?

Open the product configurator to see the controls and motor options offered for that shade. Motor and smart-home compatibility vary by product and the motor you select.
