A motor is not the same thing as a smart shade. Plenty of shades move on a remote and stop there. What people mean by smart is the shade answering a voice assistant, running on a schedule and showing up in the app they already use for the lights. Whether yours does that comes down to one decision made at order time: which chip is inside the motor.

Which shades and blinds take smart control

Roller shades are the backbone of a smart order. Motorization is available on every roller system we build, in light filtering for daytime screening and blackout where the room has to go dark on a schedule, and roller takes the least room at the reveal, which matters when the cassette has to house a motor as well as a tube.

Zebra shades earn a separate mention: the motor carries a tilt angle adjustment routine written for banded shades, so the point where the sheer and solid bands line up can be set electronically and recalled. Solar shades are the other strong fit, because glare is a scheduling problem. Light filtering cellular belongs on the list where the window is also costing you heat, and woven wood rounds it out with the narrow window exception below.

Motors, ecosystems and the widths they need

Three motor chips, and what is already in your house picks one. The Zigbee motor connects directly to five specific Alexa devices with no hub: Echo Plus 2nd Gen, Echo Studio, Echo Show 10 3rd Gen, Echo Show 2nd Gen and Echo Show 4th Gen. Every other Alexa device still needs a hub, so a Zigbee motor and an Echo Dot is not a working combination. The Matter motor connects directly to Apple HomePod and HomeKit, and also reaches Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant. The base RF433 motor needs a hub for either.

Control runs from a remote, a wall switch or an app, and the AC152-06 remote supports time control, which is what turns a motorized shade into a scheduled one. Motors are rechargeable lithium units, so there is no wiring to run: a full charge takes about four hours, and the pack wants six hours every six months even unused. The base RF433 motor can also be solar powered.

Width decides more smart orders than anything else. A motorized roller needs 8 to 10 inches more minimum width than the manual version of the same shade, because the motor sits inside the tube, landing between 20 1/8 and 21 1/4 inches depending on the cassette. Motorized cellular at 38 mm needs 23 inches of width and caps at 79 inches high, the combination most likely to fail on a tall window. Woven wood is the exception: on the standard DC motor it drops to 12 3/4 inches minimum width, where the lithium and AC motors need 25 1/4 inches.

Measuring and installing them yourself

Measure the opening rather than an existing blind. Take the width at top, centre and bottom and use the smallest figure rounded down to the nearest 1/8 inch, then do the same for height with your back to the wall. Give us the exact opening, because the factory applies the 1/4 inch width deduction itself.

Fitting is a bracket job and needs no electrician. You want a 6 mm drill bit, the brackets mark at 1.1 inch screw spacing, and two anchor types ship in the box so you can match the anchor to your wall. Two screws on opposite sides hold on a sound wall, and each bracket has four pre-drilled holes for a heavy shade. Hook the valance groove onto the latch, press back until it clicks, and confirm both top and rear have locked. One thing to know before setting limits: the upper and lower stopping points can be fine tuned once each, and changing them further means resetting the motor.

How do I measure for my shades?

Should I choose light filtering or blackout?

Light filtering fabric softens daylight. Blackout fabric blocks light through the fabric itself, while light can still enter around the edges. Your mount and any side tracks affect the final result. Solar and unlined woven fabrics have different privacy characteristics, so check the product details.
